This week in history: 5/28-5/29

On monday in class we went o the computer lab and worked with some graphs and pictures on the internet to collect information on the number of troops the US sent out to different southern countries and some of the damage they caused. We then read some documents and wrote a newspaper article. Mine was on how the Americans degraded haitians.

On tuesday we were given a graphic organizer and took notes on how the US was either a good neighbor or imperial power or both in different situations from the past. We looked at Roosevelt's Corollary as well as the Platt amendment and some others.

What's Happening Haiti? - An American News Correspondant

1920

It seems as if the Haitians and Americans will never coincide. The American Occupation has been pecking away at Haiti, insulting them and oppressing them with taxes as if they are unaware of how poor the people really are. They spread fire, but won't allow the Haitians to rebuild wooden houses under the excuse of keeping the city beautiful. Is this what becoming a world power is about? Is this how you make friends? By looking at a country as if it is nothing but a useless fly that you just need to swat.

Despite principals of international lae, the American Government has gotten involved in the internal affairs of the small republic Haiti. They look at Haitians as if they are Americans, imposing rules guaranteeing the enforcement of military occupation. The Haitians accepted this offer, following its obligations despite the threat to their autonomy and dignity of their free people, but it was an empty promise. Americans came, saw, and conquered; invading Haitians land, insulting the people, committing crimes, killings, and other barbarian acts. These are the secrets to which only America knows and to which the world is finding out.

During the five years of American Occupation, the Americans attempted to make one development in the improvement of public education. However, Haitians found that the American Occupation took Haitian education no step further. They absolutely failed in Haiti. They took advantage of women by raping them and displayed a cruel attitude, saying that "the trouble with this business is that some of these people with a little money and education, think they are as good as we are." Americans carried prejudice to Haiti and had no faith that they could be capable alone in the world.

Yesterday in class, we finished disecting and putting together Roosevelt's Corollary. After doing this we had a good idea of the intentions of the U.S and the future of America. Today in class we went to the lab to work on our Smithsonia Quests. I am now currently waiting for my quests to be approved so I can recieve my badge.
